Barcelona are reportedly targeting Chelsea duo Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner as backup options to Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling.
Sterling remains the club’s main target in the January transfer window and the club explored the possibility of signing him last summer, with the Citizens’ valuing him at around £45million.
But ESPN have reported that Barcelona are considering players who are not regular starters at their present teams so they can them to the Camp Nou on loan.
The Catalans’ financial situation left the club with no option but to seek temporary deals rather than permanent transfers.
Ziyech and Werner have fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea this season under head coach Thomas Tuchel, with both players enduring difficult campaigns.
The two Blues stars joined last summer from Ajax and RB Leipzig, respectively, and have failed to make a big impact at Chelsea.
Barcelona are also monitoring Cesar Azpilicueta’s situation with his contract expiring next summer and they could potentially sign him on a free transfer.
Meanwhile, Xavi’s main priority is to sign attacking players under limited resources and sell those who are not in his long-term plans.
