Chris Eubank Jr has placed middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin at the top of his target list for a huge fight in December.
The 31-year-old is already thinking about what comes next after his bout with German minnow Sven Elbir at Wembley Arena on October 2.
Having fought just once in the last 21 months, Eubank Jr is itching to get his career back on track.
The Brit’s options are endless if he overcomes Elbir unscathed, in a division stacked with global superstars and domestic talent.
A grudge rematch against Billy Joe Saunders is often mooted, while everyone wants a shot at pound-for-pound king Canelo Alvarez.
However, Eubank Jr’s sights are set on Golovkin, the imperious IBF champion with an iconic 41-1-1 record.
The Kazakhstan legend is due to face Ryota Murata for the WBA title in Tokyo on December 28, but the COVID situation in Japan has thrown that fight into doubt.
With Canelo pursuing dominance of the super-middleweight division, WBA interim champion Eubank Jr is arguably best placed to step in and face Golovkin, who has spoken about his desire to fight in England again having beaten Kell Brook in 2016.
However, ‘Next Gen’ refuses to rule out a host of other options, including Jermall Charlo, Demetrius Andrade and Liam Williams – who could all pave the way for the Eubank Jr to fight ‘GGG’ next summer instead.
“We’re on the brink.” Eubank Jr told talkSPORT of his desire for a mega fight. “This [Elbir] is a solid guy, 18-1, he knows what he’s doing.
“My job is to get past him and then December – big name or a world title fight, 100 per cent.
“I’ve had some issues over the last few months with the right fight to take at this particular moment in my career.
“After that, it’s all guns blazing.”
He added: “December is a big name or a world title fight. There are so many names out there.
“[Jermall] Charlo, [Demetrius] Andrade, [Liam] Williams is a domestic fight that a lot of people have been talking about.
“Saunders, Canelo, Golovkin. Is there a guy at the top of the list? Sure, I would say Golovkin is at the top of the list.
“But you can’t put all your eggs in one basket and I don’t need to. There are great fights out there to be had.
“For me, it’s just about being active and giving the fans what they want to see.”
