Ed Woodward lands new role after Manchester United departure and links up with former Premier League star

Ed Woodward has landed his first role since leaving Manchester United – linking up with a former Premier League in eSports.

The 51-year-old left Old Trafford in February 2022 after 16 years at the club, including nine years as executive vice-chairman.

Woodward became a target for sections of Manchester United’s fan base during the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, which saw the club fall foul of previous successes.

A number of the club’s transfer dealings were also heavily criticised, leading to Woodward becoming public enemy number one.

The chief announced that he would be leaving the role after the European Super League controversy in 2021, that saw Manchester United agree to join the breakaway league before retracting their plans following intense fan backlash.

Woodward was replaced by Richard Arnold last year and has kept a low profile ever since his exit.

But now, Woodward is back after agreeing to join EStars – an educational esports company – as their new non-executive director.

EStars is an award-winning company based in Abu Dhabi that has hosted almost 100 live events.

Woodward joins Norwich goalkeeper and former Newcastle No.1 Tim Krul, who is also on the company’s board.

In a statement on EStars’ official website, Woodward said: “When you put together eSports, education and a dynamic region such as the Middle East, where curriculum decisions can be made faster than Europe, it is a recipe for success.

“Joining the team is an easy decision when you add the exceptional leadership and entrepreneurial energy of Mags. I’m excited about EStars delivering a path of learning for the next generation in the (relatively) new industry of eSports.”
