Erling Haaland misses penalty for Man City as he balloons ball over crossbar in Champions League triumph over Bayern Munich

Erling Haaland missed his first ever penalty for Manchester City in their frantic Champions League clash against Bayern Munich.

The Norwegian striker had a 100 per cent record from the spot from five previous attempts, but this time he completely missed the target.

City were awarded a penalty towards the end of the first half of the second leg in Germany having won the first leg 3-0.

Dayot Upamecano, who saw a red card rescinded earlier in the match, was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the area.

Prior to the penalty, Haaland scored 47 goals in all competitions this season and was tasked with putting his side 4-0 up on aggregate.

It took a while for the striker to take his kick, with Leon Goretzka alerting referee Clement Turpin to an object that had been thrown on the pitch by a fan sat in the Bayern end.

And after Haaland was eventually given the green light, the former Borussia Dortmund hotshot sent his effort over the bar, much to the delight of the home fans.

Haaland has missed a penalty for the first time in 16 attempts across all completions, with his last one coming for Borussia Dortmund in 2021.

Despite missing the penalty, Haaland got his 48th goal of the campaign as he netted the opener on 57 minutes with an assured finish on the counter-attack.

Bayern made it 1-1 on the night thanks to Joshua Kimmich’s penalty but it would prove to be too little, too late.

Boss Thomas Tuchel was also sent off as they approached the full-time whistle, with the German giants crashing out in the quarter-finals for the third straight season.

City have advanced to the Champions League semi-finals for the third season in a row with a 4-1 aggregate win over the two legs.

They will face 14-time winners Real Madrid in the final four after the reigning champions knocked out Chelsea on Tuesday.

In the other tie of the night, Inter Milan advanced with a 5-3 aggregate victory against Benfica to set up a semi-final against rivals AC Milan.
