Gary Neville responds to Martin Keown jibes on talkSPORT as Jamie Carragher laughs at combined Manchester United and Man City XI

Jamie Carragher joked Martin Keown was right about Gary Neville after the latter picked an interesting combined Manchester United and Manchester City XI.

City could emulate their local rivals this term as they look set to win the Premier League, are through to the FA Cup final and are still in the Champions League.

Incredibly, there was no room for any City player in Neville’s initial XI

Winning all three trophies in the same season is a feat only done by the Red Devils in the 1998/99 campaign.

And as a bit of fun on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher and Neville picked their combined starting line-ups from those sides.

However, there was a distinct lack of players from Pep Guardiola’s side, in fact, his XI only contained Man United players.

Explaining his decision, Neville said: “The reason I’m picking this team is because this is the team that has done the treble and City haven’t yet. So the first thing we should do is wait for the next few weeks and when they’ve done it we can start to integrate.

“I’ve got a second team… but I’m going to wait for his [Carragher’s] disrespectful team first…”

Neville then quipped: “If I was picking a Norwegian I’d be picking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, not Erling Haaland! Them lads were like brothers.”

Carragher’s team was far more diverse. It had more City players than United players actually

But Carragher, who picked six players from City’s class of 2022/23, said: “I think what that shows is that what we heard from Martin Keown this morning – he was right about you!”

Carragher was referencing the claims made by the former Arsenal defender on talkSPORT on Monday, Keown suggesting Sky’s coverage of their defeat to Brighton was biased against the Gunners.

In response to Keown’s big claims, Neville said straight to the camera: “Big Martin, you alright Martin?!”

Neville then submitted a revised XI for the eventuality that City do end up winning the treble, which features three of their players – Kevin De Bruyne, Ruben Dias and Haaland.

The right-back slot is still up for grabs in the compromised XI

De Bruyne is playing in a more advanced role just off Haaland in the team and Neville admitted he had some regret leaving out Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole.

However, he wasn’t willing to let any City player in his midfield.

He said: “I love Jack Grealish, I love Ilkay Gundogan but I’m not entertaining the conversation around them over Ryan Giggs or Paul Scholes. I’m not entertaining the conversation.

On the David Beckham, Roy Keane, Scholes and Giggs quartet, Neville said: “That’s the greatest midfield that’s ever played football in this country, bar none.

“No one comes close when it comes to a midfield quartet like that. They had absolutely everything.”
