Manchester United are very much in the driving seat in the battle between these two teams to achieve their goal of a top four finish this season.
The Red Devils head into the midweek round of matches six points in fourth place, six points ahead of Tottenham in the battle for the top four, having also played a game fewer.
The healthy points advantage means that Spurs likely need a win on Thursday night to have any chance of closing the gap between the two, and should they suffer defeat they may as well wave goodbye to their chances of Champions League football next season.
Thursday night’s match will be the first since Cristian Stellini received his marching orders, being sacked as the caretaker manager of the club following their humiliating 6-1 defeat at Newcastle, the other team in the hunt for the top four, on Sunday afternoon.
The defeat at St James’, in which they were 5-0 down after 20 minutes, coupled with their home defeat to relegation candidates Bournemouth, spelt the end Stellini as manager with Ryan Mason set to take charge of the final six matches of the season.
Manchester United weren’t in league action on the weekend but did get back to winning ways following their disappointing exit from the Europa League at the hands of Sevilla last week.
Erik ten Hag’s side managed to beat Brighton on penalties in an FA Cup semi final, booking their place at Wembley to set up a Manchester derby in the final, and a shot at their second trophy of the season.
United have lost just one of their last six matches, winning four of them, and their next three matches could decide the outcome of their league season.
The Red Devils, play Tottenham, Aston Villa and Brighton, three European contenders in the space of a week, before their final five matches who all come against teams currently in the bottom half of the table.
Man United have won all of the last four matches they’ve played against Tottenham, and haven’t lost an away match against the north London club in more than five years.
Spurs have won just one of their last eight matches against the Red Devils.
