Jesse Lingard wanted by Barcelona and AC Milan as Manchester United star considers free transfer amid lack of game time

Barcelona and AC Milan are reportedly front of the queue to secure the transfer of Jesse Lingard if he becomes a free agent next summer.

The 28-year-old midfielder declined a new contract offer from Manchester United last month.

Lingard’s future remains uncertain and the playmaker is exploring options that will guarantee more playing time.

United’s summer signings Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho have restricted his playing time under manager Ole Gunnar Solksjaer.

He was impressive during his loan spell in the second half of last season at West Ham, scoring nine goals in 16 appearances.

According to the Daily Mail, Barcelona and AC Milan are both keen to open pre-contract negotiations in January.

Former West Ham star Trevor Sinclair recently questioned why Lingard didn’t sign for the Hammers on a permanent basis.

“If he doesn’t get given them assurances and sign a new deal, then that says he’s not ambitious as a player,” he told talkSPORT.

“I’m slightly confused that he didn’t want to sign for West Ham permanently.

“He was loved there and was the main man. He played one time for Manchester United in 2021, but played 16 times for West Ham and got into double figures for goals and back in the England squad.

“Why would you not want to be in that environment?”

Lingard has made more starts for England than he has for his club this season, starting just once for United in their Carabao Cup exit to West Ham.

The academy graduate missed the chance to play in the Euros last summer.

He is working hard as ever to be part of England manager Gareth Southgate’s plan ahead of the World Cup next year.

As it stands, the United midfielder will see out the remainder of his contract that could end his 20-year association with the club.

Lingard has won four major trophies at the club, including scoring in the FA Cup and League Cup final, alongside notching a goal in their 2-1 win over Leicester in the 2016 Community Shield.

He also helped United to win their last trophy four years ago, winning the Europa League under former manager, Jose Mourinho.

He can open discussions with foreign clubs from January onwards and the final decision lies on him on where he wants to take his playing career.
