Luis Enrique to open talks with Tottenham as Julian Nagelsmann emerges as frontrunner for Chelsea job

Sources close to Luis Enrique believe Julian Nagelsmann is the frontrunner for the Chelsea job, talkSPORT understands.

Enrique is no longer seen as a major contender to take over at Stamford Bridge and is now set to open talks with London rivals Tottenham.

Nagelsmann has already held talks with the Chelsea hierarchy about succeeding the sacked Graham Potter.

If they do offer Nagelsmann the job, Chelsea would need to negotiate with Bayern Munich as he is still under contract with the German champions despite being sacked.

As talkSPORT reported on Tuesday, Tottenham intend to speak to former Spain and Barcelona coach Enrique over their vacancy.

Promotion-winning Burnley manager Vincent Kompany is also on Spurs’ shortlist.

Both London sides opted for short-term solutions after Chelsea parted ways with Potter, and Spurs Antonio Conte.

However, Blues caretaker manager Frank Lampard has four losses form four since his return, while Cristian Stellini at Tottenham recently oversaw a worrying 3-2 loss to Bournemouth.

Luis Enrique has been out of work since the 2022 Qatar World Cup, where his Spain side were knocked out in the round of 16 by Morocco.

Previous to his stint with the national side, the former midfielder managed Celta Vigo and Roma, along with Barcelona, with whom he won a European treble in 2015.

Nagelsmann became available more recently, on March 24, having seen Borussia Dortmund close the gap to his Bayern side with a poor run of Bundesliga form in 2023.

However, the 35-year-old did have the team excelling in both the Champions League and DFB Pokal, only for his replacement, Thomas Tuchel, to be on the verge of exiting both competitions.
