Man City star Rodri scores first Champions League goal in style with ‘brilliant’ curling effort with weaker foot against Bayern Munich

Manchester City midfielder Rodri opened his Champions League account in emphatic fashion with a stunning curler against Bayern Munich.

The 26-year-old fired City into the lead in the 27th minute of their quarter-final first leg clash at the Etihad.

And what a way to do it, as the Spaniard took aim from outside the box to find the top left corner with a bending beauty with his weaker left foot.

It was his first goal in Europe’s premier competition for the ex-Atletico Madrid star, who has made it a habit of scoring when City need him the most.

His effort left talkSPORT commentators Stuart Pearce and Sam Matterface in awe of the strike.

England legend Pearce said on air: “Well, [Thomas] Tuchel’s furious with his midfield and his central defender for not coming out and getting closer.

“He’s done brilliantly though, I’ve got to say. He’s opened the goal up and you can tell he’s looking to use the body of the Bayern backline to curl it round.

“And that is absolute brilliance, it’s not going in the goal until probably the last couple of yards.

“Then the natural curve of the ball – maybe a bit of wind as well – has just turned it into the far corner. Brilliant goal.”

Co-commentator Matterface then said: “That was delicious. Feast your eyes on that! It’s a wonderful strike from Rodri.

“No wonder he went knee-sliding across the greasy turf in front of the City fans. He earnt the celebration, he milked the celebration.

“He probably couldn’t stop himself, the adrenaline flowing through his veins after what was a stunner, an absolute corker.”

Pearce then added: “It will be interesting now to see the psychological effect that will have on the Bayern team.

“I thought the five minutes before the goal they were the better team.”

He continued: “It’s the first blow of a long campaign, but certainly my goodness what a blow it was.

“It was an absolute wonderful finish, certainly worthy of this stage of a Champions League game for sure.”
