Manchester City new signing Sergio Gomez hails club’s fans as Pep Guardiola lands Marc Cucurella alternative

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of left-back Sergio Gomez from Belgian side Anderlecht on a four-year deal.

City boss Pep Guardiola was keen to add to his full-back options after the sale of Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal and viewed the 21-year-old as the right fit for his squad.

The Premier League champions have paid £11million for the Spaniard who will add competition for places in his favoured left-back position alongside first choice Joao Cancelo and starlet Josh Wilson-Esbrand

City had initially earmarked Marc Cucurella as a potential signing and despite a drawn out chase for the defender, City were unwilling to match Brighton’s £50m valuation, leaving the door open for his eventual move to Chelsea.

After completing his switch to the Etihad Stadium, Gomez spoke of his delight.

“I am incredibly proud and happy to have joined Manchester City,” Gomez told Manchester City’s official website.

“City are the best team in England and in Pep Guardiola, I have a chance to learn and develop under the most outstanding manager in world football.

“To be able to be part of this club is a dream come true for me and something any young player would aspire to.

“Playing for and being guided by Pep and his coaches is going to be very special.

“I’ve heard so much about the City fans and how passionate they are, so I can’t wait to get started and to try and help the Club achieve even more.”

Gomez started his career at Barcelona and trained at the famous La Masia.

A switch to Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund followed before returning to his native Spain with Huesca on a two-year loan deal.

The Spain Under-21 star caught the eye of Guardiola’s staff after signing for Anderlecht last summer where he impressed under the gaze of City’s legend Vincent Kompany.
