Manchester United collapse against Sevilla with Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire own-goals as Erik ten Hag suffers triple blow

Manchester United suffered eight minutes from hell against Sevilla, giving up a comfortable 2-0 lead to draw.
United appeared to be cruising in the first-half thanks to a Marcel Sabitzer masterclass with two goals, but things slipped away in painful fashion.
The Austrian had the Spanish side on the ropes in the first half of their quarter-final with two goals in seven minutes before even a quarter of the game was gone.
However, things gradually began to slip away for Erik ten Hag, beginning with a Bruno Fernandes 41st minute booking that rules him out of the second leg.
Then, in the second period, United lost both starting centre backs Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez to nasty-looking injuries, which would have set alarm bells ringing.
But the bad news was far from over, with plenty more drama to come.
Tyrell Malacia first turned in a cross from former Manchester City man Jesus Navas to let Sevilla back into the game when they had no right to be anywhere close.
That chance saw some lapse defending, but in injury time things became comical when a Youssef En-Nesyri header cannoned off of Harry Maguire and into the back of the net.
Live at Old Trafford, talkSPORT’s Adam Bridge couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
“An absolutely disastrous 10 minutes for Manchester United and Erik ten Hag,” he said.
“Both goals have been deflected beyond David de Gea, United finishing the game with after a nasty injury to Lisandro Martinez in a game and a tie they were in complete control of.
“It should have been taken away from Sevilla with missed opportunities but now they’re level.”
Sevilla are never done in the Europa League, with a record six titles, but still needed plenty of luck to get back into this tie.
The goals will have been hard enough to take, with Sabitzer calling them ‘stupid’ post-match.
However, the injuries could be far more damaging, with Paul Scholes predicting an Achilles tear and a very lengthy lay-off for the integral Martinez.
At half-time the quarter-final looked done and dusted, with United turning their attentions back to a top four finish and the FA Cup.
Now though, the focus will be on updates from the club doctor, and raising morale before a daunting trip to southern Spain next week.
