Manchester United have been urged to look closer to home for talent as they are set to sign a striker from LaLiga.
The Red Devils are closing in on a £42million deal for Atletico Madrid’s Matheus Cunha.
On paper, Cunha’s record in Spain is not world beating with just seven goals in 38 games.
Manager Erik ten Hag is keen to bring in attacking reinforcements and other names linked have been the likes of Marko Arnautovic and Alvaro Morata.
talkSPORT pundits Ally McCoist and Shay Given feel like they are overlooking some serious talent already in the Premier League.
Former Newcastle, Man City and Aston Villa goalkeeper Given told Breakfast: “It feels like Man United have a bucket of names and they are dipping into it and pulling out a name.
“It seems like there is no plan.”
When asked about why United are not going after people like Brentford’s Ivan Toney, Given replied: “I don’t understand it either. They are not the Man United of old who could take their pick of the best players in Europe.
“They are shopping in a different market.
“There are some brilliant strikers and Ivan Toney is a good example. Brentford fans won’t be happy to hear that, but there are a few other clubs sniffing around as well.”
Toney, 26, got 12 Premier League goals in his debut campaign in the top flight after working his way up from League Two.
Another name McCoist thinks the Red Devils should look at is Callum Wilson.
Wilson is more experienced in the top flight with 62 goals and 17 assists in 172 appearances.
McCoist told talkSPORT: “There is a massive amount of quality around the league. Ivan Toney is certainly one of them.
“Another that I like, I know he’s had his injuries, but it is Callum Wilson up at Newcastle. I think he’s different class.
“It’s a little like coaches. A period a couple of years ago where Portuguese coaches were the flavour of the month and they didn’t want a coach from the United Kingdom.
“Sometimes there’s excellent talent on your doorstep.
“Brentford have an outstanding forward in the Premier League, you don’t always have to go [abroad].
“The guy United are interested in from Atletico Madrid, I’m having to do a bit of work on him as he’s not someone I know a lot about.
“His stats are okay, but Shay makes a great point. Is it better taking a lesser gamble with someone who knows the league, knows the teams. Probably yes.”
