Nemanja Matic has reached out to Callum Hudson-Odoi and advised the winger to ‘be positive and keep going forward’ after being replaced in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Southampton over the weekend.

The 20-year-old had started all of Thomas Tuchel’s opening five games at the helm in the Premier League before Chelsea trip to Southampton and will no doubt have been disappointed as he was named among the substitutes at St Mary’s.

The situation reckoned memories of Chelsea’s 3-1 loss to Southampton back in October 2015, when a frustrated Jose Mourinho hauled Matic off just 28 minutes after introducing the midfielder at Stamford Bridge.

“It was hard but that’s football. You have to respect the manager’s decisions,” Matic, now at Manchester United, told Sky Sports when comparing his and Hudson-Odoi’s experiences.

“The next day is a new day and you have to be focused on your job, you do your best and that’s life so sometimes you have to adapt.

“I don’t want to see the manager is right or the player is right so the next game when you play good, nobody will remember that situation again.

“Football goes very fast, life goes fast so the most important thing for that young player is to be positive and keep going forward.”
