New Man City ace Sergio Gomez is an attacking midfielder turned left-back who is loved by Vincent Kompany and a La Masia graduate and now ready to link up with Pep Guardiola

Manchester City have landed a new left-back following the announcement of the signing of Spanish ace Sergio Gomez from Anderlecht.

And Gomez is a name Premier League fans are going to have to get used to because he has all the skills to become one of the world’s best.

But despite having a lot of ability, the path to the Premier League hasn’t been smooth for the Spaniard.

Gomez was born in Badalona, a town near Barcelona, but it was Barca’s local rivals Espanyol that swooped first.

However, the La Liga giants responded and recruited Gomez at the age of nine, where he began his progress through La Masia.

Here he became renowned for delivering big moments in important games.

He scored a hat-trick in the Poznan Cup and provided an assist for the only goal of the game in the Mediterranean International Cup final.

Gomez continued to progress and many at La Masia tipped him as the next player to break through the ranks and feature in the first team.

He even turned down a move to the Premier League in 2017 to keep his dream of playing for one of the world’s biggest clubs alive.

However, he wasn’t a left-back in the early days of his career but was an attacking midfielder or winger.

Gomez’s main attributes are his quick feet and powerful left foot, so there is plenty for Pep Guardiola to work with even if he didn’t make it at Barcelona.

He never managed a senior appearance for the La Liga giants and Borussia Dortmund swooped and signed him in January 2018.

The previous year saw the City-bound Spaniard voted as the second-best player at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup.

One keen observer appeared to be Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc.

Zorc revealed his admiration for Gomez shortly after the Bundesliga giants signed him.

He said: “Sergio Gomez is undoubtedly one of the best players of his age in the world. We’ve been interested in him for some time and are happy that he has decided to join Borussia Dortmund despite offers from many top European clubs.”

Dortmund have been known for hoovering up the best young talent and allowing them to flourish before selling them on for huge profits.

The likes of Jadon Sancho, Christian Pulisic and Erling Haaland all spring to mind.

They probably believed, given his natural talent, that Gomez would be another one of these success stories.

But unfortunately, he only managed three senior appearances for the German side across a season and a half.

Then came his loan move to Spanish side, Huesca, and it was here where Gomez made the impact many believe he should have done at Barcelona and Dortmund.

While with Huesca, the 5ft 7 left-back helped the club win promotion to La Liga, so the club extended his loan.

He managed 29 La Liga appearances the following season before Anderlecht came in and signed him from Dortmund.

City legend and multiple Premier League title winner Vincent Kompany became his manager and was instantly blown away.

The 21-year-old scored seven times and provided 15 assists as he realised his potential.

However, Kompany was more impressed with Gomez’s mental toughness, which will come in handy in the Premier League.

He told the press after Gomez made a mistake in January: “Sergio Gomez, in particular, experienced the first difficult moment of his Anderlecht period. Yes, it was a mistake that had consequences.

“But that’s part of the life of a football player. We’re talking about a championship match.

“It could have happened in the semi-finals of the World Cup. Sergio has the necessary mentality to improve after such a mistake.

“He is not here only for his talent, he also convinced us with his mental abilities. It will only be a step in his apprenticeship.”

Gomez has Kompany’s seal of approval, which can only be good news for his career at the Etihad.
