Noel Gallagher dreaming of treble glory

Manchester City fan Noel Gallagher has backed the club to match Manchester United’s feat in 1999 by winning the treble.

But the Oasis legend has revealed he will miss their potential Champions League final on June 10 as he will be in America for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds upcoming world tour.

City have one foot in the semi-final of the European Cup after beating Bayern Munich 3-0 in their quarter-final first leg tie at the Etihad.

Pep Guardiola‘s side also have an FA Cup semi-final clash with Sheffield United on the horizon, while they have their sights set on hunting down Premier League leaders Arsenal.

The Gunners are currently sit six points clear at the top, though City have a game in hand and still have to face the north Londoners on home soil.

And Gallagher has total belief that his side can win their first European Cup this season and match United‘s achievements in their famous 1998/1999 campaign.

Speaking on The Sports Bar after the Bayern drubbing, Gallagher said: “It looks like the players have flipped a switch now.

“And looking in from the outside, it looks like the players have now said about the Champions League, ‘We’re going to go win it this year, this is it.”

“And I’ve noticed, this huddle thing that we go into after we score and before we kick-off, I’ve never seen that before.

“It looks like a flip has been switched and we’re in trophy mode now, and from watching the games against Southampton and Liverpool, it looks like they are super, super focused now, and it’s real now.”

Pressed about the potential of winning the treble by talkSPORT host Jamie O’Hara, Gallagher remarked: “You better believe it! Because we’ve got Sheffield United in the FA Cup semi-final, probably Brighton [who play Man United] in the final if we get there.

“And then hopefully Chelsea will somehow jam it against Real Madrid and then we’ll annihilate them and play Benfica if they somehow manage to jam it into the final.

“But in all seriousness though, these are the moments you live for as a football fan, we’ve got potentially 15/16 games left, all finals. This could be it.

“It’s real, they can do it from here. Because no one has spoken about it for the last four months when usually it’s about the quadruple and all this kind of thing.

“Now all of a sudden, it’s like, ‘Ooh hang on a minute, we’re still in for this treble here’, and actually watching that tonight, I wouldn’t bet against it.”

Former Tottenham midfielder O’Hara then posed the question as to whether he will be in attendance in Istanbul after being present in Porto in 2021 when Chelsea beat City in the Champions League final.

To which Gallagher said: “Unfortunately when I booked my world tour, I forgot to factor in the flipping World Cup.

“So when the Champions League final is on, I am going to be in America. I don’t care though! As long as we win it, I’m not bothered about being there. If we win it, I couldn’t care less about being there.”

Pressed if he is performing on the night of the final, he stated: “Yeah, I’ll be in San Diego.

“It’s on at like midday there, so I’ll be – if we get there – it’ll be a daytime thing, but I’m not bothered about being there as long as we win it.”

It’s not just Gallagher that has backed City to win the three top trophies, with talkSPORT’s Jason Cundy waxing lyrical over them.

The ex-Chelsea defender Cundy stated: “That performance tonight should send shockwaves and shivers right through the rest of Europe. What can you say about that?”

Asked by O’Hara whether City will win the Champions League, Cundy said: “Unless Pep does what Pep can do, and has done where he out-Pep’s himself for some reason. Tonight he didn’t do that.”

He continued: “Manchester United should be worried about the treble. They should be very worried about the treble.

“So they’re in one semi-final almost certainly, and they’re probably going to get into the final of the FA Cup.

“And if everything goes to plan, they’re going to beat Arsenal to the title, so the treble – and no one’s really spoken about it – not really.

“I’ve spoken about Man City before when they’ve been in all four competitions late on talking about the quadruple, but it’s on by the way.

“United fans should be shaking in their boots.”
