Pep Guardiola has played down talked of a title race and insisted he will only talk about the next fixture. When discussing his team selection vs Crystal Palace, where he made four changes including dropping Rodri and Joao Cancelo, he finally revealed his hand in the title race.

He said: “This period is always so tight, people are tired, mentally, physically. You have to rotate and everyone is involved. Fresh legs for the second half and minute one and for the next games.”

The team selection worked, as City beat Palace with a 4-0 score. As well as the significance of moving up to second in the Premier League table, City also showed signs of further fixing problems of previous seasons.

Though, he revealed his hand slightly by sending a message to his side that there will be hiccups along the way between now and the end of the season.

He said: “Crystal Palace. I’m not able to say much further. I’m pretty sure there will be bad moments during the season. It’s not a problem, we fought a lot when we were eight points behind before we played Southampton. We fought to be there and we will fight a lot to maintain to be there. Many things will happen, it’s a weird season. That’s why I don’t think about the position in the table, what will happen in the future is rest well and prepare for Aston Villa.”

City will need that fight, and it’s a reassurance that Guardiola is planning for a title race, despite his media insistence that the next game is the only focus.
