Taiwo Awoniyi ends Arsenal’s fragile title hopes as Nottingham Forest ensure relegation survival

Taiwo Awoniyi’s first-half strike was enough to see Arsenal’s campaign fall apart completely as Manchester City were confirmed as champions.
The Nottingham Forest forward slotted home in the 19th minute at the City Ground after a sloppy Martin Odegaard pass towards Morgan Gibbs-White to give the Garibaldi a 1-0 win.
Surging forward from midfield, the former Wolves starlet played Awoniyi in to convert from close range and put Steve Cooper’s side ahead.
With no response from the Gunners, that victory for Forest was enough to see them secure their Premier League survival.
That win puts Forest on 37 points in 16th spot – four points ahead of 17th placed Everton with a game to play.
But Awoniyi’s strike – his fifth goal in his last three outings – has far bigger repercussions at the top end of the table.
A win for Cooper’s men secures the Premier League title for Manchester City – their third consecutive championship.
Jamie O’Hara was live on talkSPORT’s Gameday Phone-In when Forest scored the goal to put them ahead and the former Tottenham midfielder didn’t miss his opportunity to stick the knife into Mikel Arteta’s side when discussing Spurs’ misfortunes.
He said: “The best thing that has happened to Spurs this season is watching Arsenal crumble like a deck of cards, folded they have!”
