Tottenham’s Daniel Levy tops list of highest paid directors in Premier League as figures revealed
Sections of Tottenham’s fanbase have long bemoaned the frugal spending of their board on players to aid them in their search of silverware.
But it turns out Spurs, who have sacked interim boss Cristian Stellini after four games in charge, are more than happy to splash the cash – just on directors instead.
According to author of the book ‘The Price of Football’ and accountancy of football expert Kieran Maguire, the north Londoners have forked out the most for directors in the Premier League.
The graph posted by Maguire on Twitter on Monday shows Spurs’ highest paid director, Daniel Levy, earns a whopping £3.265million-a-year.
That won’t be music to Spurs fans given the club lost 6-1 to Newcastle on Sunday, are sliding away from finishing in the top four, have no permanent manager and haven’t won a trophy since 2008.
Brighton come second in the table, with the Seagulls giving their highest paid director £2,896,000-per-year.
Todd Boehly’s Chelsea come in third – just behind Brighton with £2.244m – while the Blues’ London rivals West Ham complete the top four with a figure of £2,240,000-a-year.
Spending big on directors clearly doesn’t always translate on the pitch, as shown by Spurs and Chelsea.
At the other end of the graph, reigning Premier League champions Manchester City spend £0.
It’s a similar tale for high-flying Newcastle, who spend the second lowest amount – £260,000 – on their highest paid director.
Tottenham’s rivals and Premier League leaders Arsenal sitting 15th in the table exacerbates the point of not having to spend big on directors to harbour success, with the Gunners spending £634k.
Spurs also spent £162.5m on new signings last summer, but have nothing to show for it, being knocked out of every competition and looking likely to finish outside the top four.
