Vincent Kompany and Burnley lose to QPR despite 81 per cent possession and 21 shots as Chelsea managerial target’s wait for Championship title continues

Burnley will have to wait to secure the Championship title after losing to struggling Queens Park Rangers, despite dominating the game.

Fans had turned out at Turf Moor for what they hoped would be a promotion party, but Gareth Ainsworth’s side had other ideas as they secured a much-needed 2-1 win to pull them away from the relegation zone.

Sam Field gave QPR the lead midway through the second-half, before Manuel Benson levelled the match for the Clarets.

However, the Hoops wrapped up a surprise win when Chris Martin found the net just three minutes from time.

While it’d be unfair to belittle QPR’s victory, the result is something of a surprise given Burnley’s statistical dominance.

The Clarets managed 21 shots on goal compared to QPR’s six, while Vincent Kompany’s side also boasted a staggering 81 per cent possession and a far superior passing accuracy of 89 per cent.

Already promoted, Burnley won’t be too worried by failing to secure the Championship crown in this match, given that they need a maximum of three points more to win the title.

However, they might be worried by the ongoing speculation surrounding their manager.

Kompany is one of the main names on the shortlist for the Chelsea job, a desirable role for a man who looks set for a managerial career at the highest level.

Whatever happens, the Manchester City legend will be taking his seat in a Premier League dugout come August, whether it’s in Lancashire or in London, with Tottenham said to also be interested in the Belgian.
